At Wakefield Village Kindergarten we believe in the importance of play-based learning and research supports that this process of learning enhances children’s academic and developmental learning outcomes later in life.
Play-based learning uses children's natural motivation to play. A play-based program builds on this motivation, using play as a context for learning. Children can explore, experiment, discover and solve problems in imaginative and playful way.
A play-based approach involves both child-initiated and teacher-supported learning. The teacher encourages children’s learning and inquiry through interactions that aim to stretch their thinking to higher levels.
Loose parts simply means moveable materials that children can use in their play. Loose parts play encourages children to explore experiment, design, create and construct. It gives them the opportunity to figure out that there are different ways of doing things. It teaches them to be critical of their own creations, be flexible and resilient when things don’t work out. Loose parts play encourages independent play, self motivation and creative thinking.
We are committed to sustainable living and this education forms a basis of our programme, children are shown through modelling and experiences how to minimize our ecological footprint and create sustainable living practices.
We wish to create a relaxed environment where children, parents and teachers feel that they belong and the kindergarten is an extended part of their community. Children’s’ learning experiences are further enhanced with frequent trips out and about in the community. As we are located so close to Faulkner Bush, Wakefield Homestead and Wakefield School we are spoilt for choice in places to visit.
Our teachers work hard to ensure children have every opportunity to stretch their learning through play. Our teachers are also viewed as lifelong learners who work alongside children and remain true to their role of nurturing, encouraging and inspiring the holistic development of all children. Our teachers thrive through their engagement with children, sharing and celebrating in their moments of unplanned, unexpected and ultimately unlimited experiences. They are valued for their knowledge, commitment and passion for children. We see our teachers as co-learners, supporting and guiding children to explore and discover the world around them. We believe our teachers are the key stakeholders in forming, nurturing and growing strong relationships with our children, whānau and wider community.
